Chapter Four

Hugo

Hugo’s black Mercedes rides like butter melting on toast. I’m almost tempted to fall asleep right in his car. No more than twenty minutes later, he turns in to a shopping mall known for having luxury stores.

We exit the car and I follow Hugo in Saks Fifth Avenue.

“Mom’s sixtieth birthday’s this weekend and I want to get her something nice.”

My eyes look over items in the store. I can tell that the items are expensive just from the ambience of the store. The floor glistens, barely audible music plays in the background, and items are on display to sell. I’ve never been in a Saks, but I love the store’s layout.

“What do you think she’d like?” Hugo asks.

I shrug. “I don’t know.” I don’t want to be presumptuous as if I know his mother’s taste. “Maybe you can get her some jewelry?”

Hugo shakes his head. “She has more than enough of that. She hardly wears the stuff anyway.”

“What about some perfume or a nice handbag?”

Hugo lights up. “A handbag sounds like a good option.”

A sales rep dressed to impress shows up. “May I help you, sir?” She smiles, revealing unnaturally white teeth.

“No, thanks.”

Her smile remains. “Well, just let me know whether I can be of any assistance.” She walks away and approaches another customer entering the store.
